Our internal clock is found in the nerve cells of the hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It stays tuned to the light/dark cycle through the eyes and optic nerve. Then it coordinates the network of internal clocks that are in almost every organ of the body. It turns on and off clock genes and timekeeping proteins that increase or decrease in every cell every 24 hours. It controls nearly every body function.
